3 Tips For Managing Your Child's Eczema

Posted on: 3 March 2015

Many people deal with eczema. It is a very difficult skin disorder that causes severe dry patches all over the skin. In many cases the eczema can become inflamed where it burns, itches and turns red and like a rash. If your child is prone to dry skin or eczema there are a couple things that you can do to ensure that you are properly caring for their skin. Here are a couple things you should know:

1. Avoid Hot Showers

Many people do not realize how bad hot water is for their skin. When your child takes a long hot shower it will dry out their skin. Their skin has oils on it that help to keep it moist and protect it. However, when they take a long shower in hot water, it will break down those oils and remove them from their skin. This leaves their skin vulnerable and dry.

If your child has eczema, pay close attention to the state of their skin after a shower. Most people notice that they have a break out right after the shower. For this reason, your child should avoid showering daily, and when they do take a shower, make sure that water is warm and not hot.

2. Use Mild Cleaners

Strong soaps with perfumes and dyes are one of the worst things for your child's skin. It will dry out the skin and leave a thin film on the skin that will prevent their body from hydrating itself. This is why it is so important that when your child washes their skin they use a cleaner that is mild and safe. It doesn't take that much to get the dirt and sweat off your child's body. They should be able to remove everything with something as simple as baby soap. If your child has eczema, look for the mildest cleanser possible.

3. Moisturize With Creams

Lotions are okay for many people, but they can be unhelpful for people with eczema. Many lotions have perfumes, and other additives that can irritate your child's sensitive skin. For this reason, you should only use creams on your child's skin. There are great products available that are made specifically for eczema. They highly moisturize the skin and don't have any additives. You should apply these creams to your child's skin daily, if not multiple times a day during their eczema flare-ups. It will be the best way to hydrate their skin and stop the eczema from getting worse.
