How A Cosmetic Dentist Can Improve Your Smile

Posted on: 21 November 2014

Cosmetic dentistry is rapidly becoming one of the more popular forms of dentistry, as it is one of the most effective ways for a dentist to improve one's smile.  Here are just a handful of the different methods that cosmetic dentists use to do so:

Tooth Bonding

Bonding improves your teeth if there is space in between each tooth.  Dentists can also use bonding materials to fix cavities and chipped and cracked teeth.  One of the best things about bonding is that it is not a long and expensive process; rather, a cosmetic dentist will be able to complete the procedure in just one visit to the office.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth naturally lose their white color over time. Things like smoking, eating, and drinking things such as coffee can all lead to discoloration of teeth.  The good news is that now with the help of a cosmetic dentist, your teeth do not have to stay this way, because they can help you whiten your discolored teeth.  Cosmetic dentists can use a special type of bleach to whiten your teeth back to how they should be.  The dentist will either be able to complete this mostly at their office, or by training you with a procedure you can use at home.

Your cosmetic dentist can put together a custom made mouthpiece for you to take home; this process does take a few weeks to complete, whereas visiting the dentist's office to complete the process will only take a few hours.  Since your teeth can become stained in the future by the same ways that they were stained in the first place, you should continue to take good care of your teeth to slow down the discoloration process.

Veneers

Veneers are porcelain or plastic shells that are used to cover the front of the teeth in order to change their shape and color.  Veneers are a stronger alternative to bonding and sometimes don't cost that much more money.  They are used to fix teeth that have spaces in between them, or those that are crooked, stained, worn, chipped, or poorly shaped.  Veneers are also simple to put on, as the cosmetic dentist will take an impression of your tooth that needs work, and base the veneer off of the impression.  Cement will be used to keep the veneer securely in place.  This process will usually require about two trips to the dentist's office.
